How do we know that others have experiences in the same way that we do? Do others expereince pain for example? Sure, when I shoot someone, as I often do, they writh around in aparant ago0ny, but how do we know they experience anything remotely similiar to us?

For instance, when someone uses the term 'stabbing pains' how do we know it is describing what we describe when we use the term stabbing pains?

Furthermore, how do we know others experience anything at all? Could other minds not exist, and all people are just acting in an extremely complex but ultimatly pre-programmed course of responces to given situations?

Please respond in about 1200 words, with upto ten references, in logical well connected paragraphs. Thankyou.
You, as an individual person, are not a unique entity in terms of being human. All humans have the same feelings. Pain to you is the same pain to me because we're both humans and share the same genetic and evolutionary past.

Now, if you're asking if we feel the same sensation when we say "pain" is an unknown but an unimportant question. No one want's pain, we all can agree that pain is a negative feeling, therefore it doesn't matter what the sensation feels like because the reactions between individuals are the same (generally speaking).

Look at sex. Sex may not feel the same for everyone, but it is a desireable feeling in normal people. Because of that, we all act like the sensation is the same.
You, sir, need to be put away somewhere safe... smilie
Good Morning To Everyone,

I just noticed this Posting about Pain, so I thought I would share some thoughts.

Let me just say that I have had severe headaches all of my life, and to correct this, the doctors tried four brain surgeries during which they inserted catheters into my brain to make sure that fluids are draining properly. This has helped, but I am still experiencing pain, and a lot of it, I might add. In addition, I have had two knee replacements done. I only relate my history of surgeries to tell you that I think I know a little something about pain. I am in constant pain every day of my life, and I take several medications for this. "Stabbing pains", yes I have them quite a lot everyday, and they are not pleasant, let me tell you! I never thought I would be in this position of being in pain constantly, but I am, so it must be dealt with. I think the issue of pain relating to illness is much more drawn-out than pain relating to a sudden-death kind of thing as in being killed. The sudden-death issue is rather painful, but quickly over, whereas illness pain can last for years.

Just a few rambling thoughts . . .

Well I finally got that essay done... Who knows, it may come to pass that I am not required to resubmitt! (In other years you just fail, but the faculty of arts wants everyone to pass first year! curse them!)
Mr. Evereste:

I must apologize if you took my earlier post to be offensive. I would like to tell you that it was entirely in jest.
No offense taken.
I am quite glad.
Good Morning To You, Bishop Harvey,

Isn't it wonderful when people actually let you be cheerful and a genuinely nice person?

I find that to be such a generous gesture.

P. S., Tell me, what is the beautiful palace which is pictured below your name? It is truly quite lovely. You must tell me all about it.

Rosalie
You know, back when I was looking for floor plans and elevations of palaces, I found that on a google search.. I cannot remember what I typed in for the search though.. If you would like it I can give it to you somehow. I think it's cool. I like old architecture; new buildings have no character.
