A SERVICE FOR THE VIGIL OF THE SOLEMNITY OF THE SUPREMACY OF THE CROWN
Friday, 24th July 2009
His Lordship, the Right Reverend James Marchmain
Lord Bishop of Kells
Presiding
"I have the good fortune to be able to rely upon the example of three exemplary predecessors for guidance as I begin my reign. Their names and their renown are known to you all, and I trust my observation of their reigns has given me wisdom to better execute my duties and responsibilities.
It is my solemn promise to you that I will always uphold the principles of constitutional government while maintaining, at the same time, the ancient and noble traditions we all have come to cherish. I desire, in fact, to underscore our nation's attachment to those traditions, perhaps more so than ever has been done before.
I trust to Parliament and the nation to support me in the arduous duties which now devolve upon me by inheritance, and to which I am determined to devote my entire strength throughout my reign."
-His Most Gracious Majesty King James II
OPENING ANTHEM: "Land of Hope and Glory"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5Cbw8OSC...re=related
Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still, and wider, shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet!
Truth and Right and Freedom, each a holy gem,
Stars of solemn brightness, weave thy diadem.
Tho' thy way be darkened, still in splendour drest,
As the star that trembles o'er the liquid West.
Throned amid the billows, throned inviolate,
Thou hast reigned victorious, thou has smiled at fate.
Land of Hope and Glory, fortress of the Free,
How may we extol thee, praise thee, honour thee?
Hark, a mighty nation maketh glad reply;
Lo, our lips are thankful, lo, our hearts are high!
Hearts in hope uplifted, loyal lips that sing;
Strong in faith and freedom, we have crowned our King!
IMPERIUM SINE FINE DEDI
V/: The King in his Kingdom is the Emperor of his Kingdom. Dominion without end hath the heavens bestowed upon him. The Lord hath given him power over lands and seas.
R: Dominion without end hath the heavens bestowed upon him.
V/: We prepare to receive Astraea, whom Heaven will send in favour of our young Monarch.
R: Dominion without end hath the heavens bestowed upon him.
V/: The Holy Balm rains down upon him and blankets him in blessing, power, grace, dominion, and fortune.
R: Dominion without end hath the heavens bestowed upon him.
Let us pray:
Lord save this Kingdom, and all the Realm in which we sojourn, from all affliction, peril, and need. Lord of Lords, Ruler of rulers, remember all the rulers to whom Thou hast given rule in the earth, and O remember especially our divinely-guarded King, and comfort him more and more, and prosper his way in all things.
Speak good things unto his heart, for Thy Church, and all Thy People, grant to him profound strength and perpetual peace of mind, that in his tranquility we, his subjects, may lead happy and peaceful lives in all goodness and honesty.
We likewise implore your blessings, O Lord, upon the Royal Family and all the Court, upon all noble men and justices, all magistrates and officers of the law, all teachers and merchants, all physicians, all tradesmen, and upon the poor unemployed in these hard days; upon the rising generation, upon those who have come before; upon all of Christendom and the whole world.
Amen.
HYMN: "Rock of Ages"
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save from wrath and make me pure.
Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

CONCLUDING ORATION:
Thou Who hast given to us Our Sovereign Lord King James to be our undisputed Monarch over these realms, let never his enemies prevail over him. Let their intrigues be exposed and their plots be foiled. Protect our King with your mighty power. Lift him high aloft lest he dash his foot against a stone. And at the end of his journey, bring him into that everlasting kingdom crowned with an everlasting crown.
Amen.
CONCLUDING ANTHEM: "God Save the King"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RZPe5ZA7...re=related
God save our gracious King,
Long live our noble King,
God save the King!
Send him victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the King!
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter his enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On him be pleased to pour;
Long may he reign:
May he defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the King!
