My Dear Friends:

Now that I have formally taken possession of this See, it is fitting that I should likewise take unto myself a suitable motto by which to herald my episcopacy.

I have decided to adopt as my episcopal motto, therefore, in the Scottish Gaelic tongue:

IRID GHIBHT DHE AGUS AN RIGH

Which in English translates to: "Through the Grace of God and the King."

I had originally thought to adopt a Latin motto, following a generally adhered to episcopal convention, but I felt that, given the Celtic name bestowed upon this bishopric, a suitable Gaelic motto might be chosen, instead, by her first Lord Spiritual.

So I have adopted the motto of Clan MacInnes, with my apologies to them, as I thought it seemed to entirely suit my purposes.

It is through the Grace of God, after all, that our King reigns; and it is through the King's grace that I am here, as First Estate lord of this See.

Peace and happiness to every one of you.

God save the King.
