My Lords and Gentleman:

Can the Speaker (or anyone) advise the House whether or not it is still the custom to offer an Address in Reply to the King's Speech or to do likewise thanking the Sovereign following the Royal Assent?

Christopher Livingston

My Lords and Gentlemen,

We have not offered an formal Address in Reply to the King's Speech for several years. The last time we did, there was a somewhat bizarre incident in which a member voted against sending it... and then it just never happened again.
