My Beloved Subjects:
Since my accession to the throne on May the 18th, I have had the consolation of receiving heartfelt good wishes for health and success from many of you.
Your tributes and kind sentiments have been most touching. I have also been glad to have had the assistance and support of my Government, and of various persons of note within the Realm, not the least of which my august predecessor, the Duke of Gottingen.
I thought it right and opportune, therefore, to offer my sincere thanks to all of you, and to assure you of my constant solicitude for the welfare of all my people. The people of Hanover have been my friends and my strength over the many years I have had the happiness to be a part of this community. Now, having become your King, you are my strength more so than ever before.
I have the good fortune to be able to rely upon the example of three exemplary predecessors for guidance as I begin my reign. Their names and their renown are known to you all, and I trust my observation of their reigns has given me wisdom to better execute my duties and responsibilities.
It is my solemn promise to you that I will always uphold the principles of constitutional government while maintaining, at the same time, the ancient and noble traditions we all have come to cherish. I desire, in fact, to underscore our nation's attachment to those traditions, perhaps more so than ever has been done before.
I trust to Parliament and the nation to support me in the arduous duties which now devolve upon me by inheritance, and to which I am determined to devote my entire strength throughout my reign.
May God bless each and every one of you.
James R.
