MARCHMAIN PALACE
Bergen

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I would like to apologize for my outburst last night. While I remain convinced that many of the concerns I raised are legitimate, I certainly could have found a much more diplomatic way of airing them. Some of the issues I raised confused many of you, particularly those of you from Pendronia. Those items are more or less related to internal events peculiar to Hanover which you are probably not familiar with. You have to understand that I've been here since day one whereas many of the rest of you became involved in Hanover later, and in some cases only recently. I've been able to witness trends and developments, many of which I have fought all along because I truly believed they were not in the best interests of our nation.

I may have addressed my concerns in a more cool-headed manner under normal circumstances. However, when it was declared by certain elements within the Joint Committee on Unification that the meetings were being held in secret largely on account of me, I became confused, hurt, indignant and, yes, angry. I remain perplexed by the charge.

I initiated this dialogue here in Hanover because after reading the threads in the Pendronian forums I truly believed that a union between Hanover and Pendronia would benefit both nations and create a wonderful national community. It hurt me to hear that the effort which I initiated here had to be kept away from me for fear that my influence might be felt. How terrible that would be.

I now know that this was not the entire committee's point of view, but with the committee's deliberations closed to the public, I could only go by the expressions of the committee member who delivered the rationale for secrecy. Lord Brunswick's explanation for the committee's secrecy coupled with internal events which caused me to fear for the direction in which Hanover was headed finally brought my temper to the boiling point, and I exploded. Please forgive me. I truly am sorry.

I would like to state that my comments were not meant to assail His Majesty, and I am sorry that the king felt that he was the cause of them. He was not. King Alexander has always had my full support and my genuine respect. That has not changed. I have been only impressed and thankful for everything that he has done for Hanover. He is a good man and an excellent executive. I commend him for his wise and active leadership.

I've enjoyed getting to know many of you and interacting with you here, whether our discussions or debates focused on the nation, the "empire", Roman Pontiffs or the Dean Machine. You're all good people with good ideas and a strong sense of purpose. I wish you all the very best as you continue to your efforts to marry two outstanding communities together, forging a grand empire in the process.

With affection and esteem,

James

Duke of Marchmain
Duke of Marchmain,

We're all friends here.

It is not too unreasonable that something as stressful as a unification could cause even our most level headed folks to be rash now and again.

I suggest we all just keep on keeping on. Things are still bright by my recon, even if some tempers flared.

Regards,
HM Alexander of Hanover
