The Legal Instruments Order 2005


An Order to define the various instruments by which royal authority is exercised, and to make provision for the enumeration of the same.</center>
Whereas for the expedience of both enactment and subsequent reference, it is necessary that all legal documents be properly categorised and enumerated according to fixed rules, Be it ordered by His Majesty the King, by and with the advice of His Most Honourable Privy Council:

I. That the King, acting on the advice and with the consent of a lawfully summoned Parliament, may promulgate Acts of Parliament, which shall be superior in legal authority to all other law, and which shall be published by the Lord Chancellor, enumerated by regnal year and chapter.

II. And that by the advice of His Most Honourable Privy Council, the King may further issue Orders in Council, which shall be inferior in authority only to Acts of Parliament, and which shall be published by the Lord President of the Council, enumerated by year and number.

III. And that the Great Officers of State and Ministers, viz., the Lord Chancellor, the Lord President of the Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of HM Treasury, may publish legally binding Statutory Instruments as is necessary for the execution of the duties assigned in their Letters Patent, and as allowed by law, which shall be published by the Great Officer or Minister in question, enumerated by year and number.

IV. And that the King may grant special rights and powers to one of his subjects, or a group thereof, by means of Letters Patent and Charters of Incorporation, which shall be published by the Lord Chancellor.
