One of the American hostages in Lebenon during the '80s (a few were taken by anti-Isreali extremists) spent five years with another hostage and a copy of the P section of the 1933 edition of Encyclopedia Brittanica. Another person, who later made a documentary series about the old testament, was stuck with just the old testament for several years.
The doco series was called "It Ain't Necissarily So", probably wasn't aired in the US or on any comercial station, considering it aimed to debunk the old testament.
The Decline and Fall, eh? I'll second that one. Much as I dislike some of Gibbon' opinions, you can't beat it for length!
Definately the Bible, although which version is a tricky dilema.
Finally, a choice almost as difficult as which version of the Bible, one of Terry Pratchett's books, to provide comic relief after long sessions of Gibbon.
Yeah, if I could take a series of books it would be the complete discworld!
I have a great idea.
One would not have to worry about versions if one takes the Bible in one of its original languages, which are, I assume, Aramaic or Hebrew.
Then one just has to spend countless hours learning those languages and then proceed to read the Bible.
It would take years!
Except how would you learn the languages if you dont have any other books.
