<span class=title> Letter to His Holiness, the Pope</span><hr size=1>
<strong><div style="text-align:center">JR</div></strong>

MOST HOLY FATHER,

Today, within the twenty-fifth year of a glimmering Pontificate replete with outstanding milestones, you stand before the world to mark your eighty-third birthday. You stand before us today, a frail figure suffering the effects of a brutal disease, yet paying your afflictions no heed as you continue to follow in the demanding footsteps of your Divine Master and of your illustrious predecessors without complaint.

In the course of 83 years, you have witnessed first hand both the beauty and the ugliness of the human drama. As a young man, you experienced the brutality of the Nazi regime within your native Poland which was only to be followed by the destructive effects of Soviet totalitarianism. How gratifying to know that it was largely due to your efforts that that evil empire collapsed, falling about the towering presence of your just and peaceful reign as if forced to humble and dissolve itself before the irresistable evidence of the justice of your message.

Throughout your long and celebrated reign, this drama would unfold again and again as oppressive governments around the world literally crumbled before you, your presence having inspired those who labored under their dark reigns to seek a new and better day for themselves and for their nations. Surely Providence has given you to this age as some sort of Divine scourge of wicked regimes. Surely God has raised you up in this day as the great champion of those who have no champion.

The oppressed, the hungry, the sick, the disabled, the unloved, the unwanted have all looked to you for freedom, for nourishment, for care, for validation, for love. You have responded to all those who suffer in our world as a father would respond to his own children, never ceasing to labour for their welfare and never counting the cost.

It was you, Most Holy Father, whom the Lord chose to lead His pilgrim Church on Earth into its third millenium. No figure less than you would be half so well suited for this triumphant task. No figure less heroic than yourself would be half so well suited to heal the wounds which some ministers of the Catholic faith have recently inflicted upon their Mother, the Church.

Because of that special bond which exists between Christian princes and the Vicar of Christ, I am compelled today to celebrate your years and your reign and to mark this happy event with a public affirmation of my deep personal respect for you and your outstanding achievements and indefatigable pastoral leadership.

On behalf of the Royal Family and the Kingdom of Hanover, I wish you every happiness throughout the coming year and into this next chapter of your remarkable adventure at the helm of Peter's Barque.

With filial affection and admiration,

James R
