Members of Parlement,
I am contemplating resigning my seat in Parlement to someone more able to come up with legislative material.
How many of you think I should resign?
Cordially,
John Harvey
Member of Parlement
John, it's not all about proposing new legislation. The most important duty of a Parliamentarian is scrutinising and voting on legislation that is going through, no matter who it came from. In macronational Parliaments, it is not common for backbench MPs (i.e. those who are not members of government) to get Bills through - their duty is to look out for the interests of their voters by voting as they see fit.
As long as you can make the commitment to vote on all the Bills (unless you genuinely want to abstain), and propose amendments to Bills if you see fit, then I don't think you should resign.
and certainly not before I pass a casual vacancies act! Seriously John, the duke here is right, the role of an MP is not just proposing laws, but also keeping the government honest (questions in question time, something I have been a little slack with lately..) and ensuring bad laws dont pass!
You would be serving the Kingdom well if you voted on matters before the house based on their merits, dont feel that you have to be a legislatomaniac like the government members of the house!
Oh good. Well, I'm staying then.
Could someone inform me as to what bills need voting on?
Mr. Harvey,
Certainly. At present, you need to vote on the Regional Powers Act, The External Affairs Act, and the Freedom of Information Act.
Sincerely,
Lord Oldenburg
